Henna Night Event
February 6, 6:00pm, Family Housing Community Room, UGA

IFCO organized a special event called Henna Night. Here is a brief information on a traditional Henna Night in Turkey followed by pictures from the actual event staged by IFCO.

Henna Night Tradition

The ceremony which is held one day before the wedding at the home of bride and groom is called Henna Night. It generally takes place at the bride's home and is celebrated among women, although either side can elect to host it. Conventionally, the dry henna brought by bridegroom's family is broken into pieces in a silver or copper vessel by a woman whose parents are alive, and not divorced. Having prepared the bride by placing a veil ornamented with red flakes over her head, she is accompanied to the middle of the room through the rhythms of hymn and folk songs in honour of night.

The henna that has been kneaded with water earlier is brought in on a tray surrounded by candles and placed in the middle of the room. In some places, the hands of the bride are hennaed and then the henna is distributed to guests; in other areas the henna is first distributed to guests, and only after everybody has left is it placed on the bride's hands. If the bride so wishes, henna can also be applied on her feet and hair.

A woman places the henna on one of the bride's hands, and a young girl places it on the other. Before the henna is applied, coins or gold is also placed on her both hands. After the woman who accompanied the bride for rubbing henna leaves the room, close friends of the bride stay with her and have fun till morning.
